From whaling to whale watching
The Azores, a group of islands off the coast of Portugal were once a thriving world famous whaling community. Its been a number of years since the last whaling vessels hunted, but not long enough ago that many of the former whalers are now working in tourism. With a large number of sperm, fin, fin-blue hybrid and blue whales calling this archipelago home, whale watching has become big business. The entire island has embraced this new boost to the economy while sharing a troubling history with the whales, whom they continue to rely on for income.
