Citrus Roots

Living in Chula Vista—once known as The Lemon Capital of the World—I was inspired to look more closely at the food we eat and the land it grows on. This project uses detailed photographs of citrus to explore the cultural and historical significance of what nourishes us and the changing landscapes that sustain our communities.

I grow and photograph seven types of citrus in my urban yard, three types are featured here: Meyer lemons, blood oranges, and Valencia oranges. Unlike the uniform fruit of industrial agriculture, homegrown citrus reveals unique variations—each piece a still life study in texture, color, and form.

This work celebrates Chula Vista’s agricultural history and highlights the interconnectedness of people, food, and the environment, inviting a deeper appreciation for the beauty and stories hidden in the everyday.
