Gypsies and Travellers of England

In England, there are nomadic communities with diverse traditions. Some live in handmade caravans or mobile homes, while others have settled into traditional houses. Broadly, these groups include Travellers (English, Irish, and Scottish Travellers) and Gypsies (Romani).

Throughout the year, gatherings bring these communities together for horse trading, commerce, and cultural celebration. The largest of these is the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria, England.

This project offers a glimpse into the fair, its traditions, the cultural tensions it stirs in town, and the unique world it reveals for those who attend.
